Dublin to Belfast Railway Line

2005 was the 150th anniversary of the completion of the vital rail link between Dublin in Eire (Southern Ireland) and Belfast, the capital city of Northern Ireland. An Post (the Irish Post Office) commemorated the event with a set of four stamps, a prestige booklet and a miniature sheet. The stamps depict events in the life of the line, including one of the first trains crossing the Boyne Valley viaduct; a train entering Dublin Connolly Station; the  modern-day “Enterprise” leaving Belfast; and the Enterprise speeding through the Irish countryside. In recent years a €6.1m refurbishment of the 1855-completed Boyne Viaduct has taken place, financed through the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme, which seeks to address the economic and social problems which result from the existence of borders. It supports strategic cross-border co-operation for a more prosperous and sustainable region.
