This day in stamps: April 14th

Stamps are a great way to illustrate various historical events. The significance of  some of these major events is often equalled by  the amount of stamp issues related to it. Let’s have a look at some of the historical events that took place on the 14th of april. 1865 The American president Abraham Lincoln got injured after being shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s Theatre in Washington.  Lincoln died of his injuries the following  day. Wilkes Booth was a well known actor with sympathies for the Confederate cause. 1894 Thomas Edison demonstrates the kinetoscope, an early version of the filmprojector. 1912 British passenger liner, RMS Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 pm ship’s time. The collision caused Titanic’s hull plates to buckle inwards along her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea; the ship gradually filled with water. Two hours and 40 minutes, the ship sank, claiming well over 1,500 lives.

1961 The first Soviet television broadcast from space is a fact. During the  spaceflight of the Vostok 1, the first space television system was called Seliger-Tral-D transmitted it’s first broadcast from space.

1999 The Reichbund moves back to Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city becomes the official capital of Germany again. It took nine years for the gouverment to return there.
